HKU LINGUISTICS FIELD TRIP 2023

Linguistics field trips LING3003

The capstone Linguistics Field Trip course introduces students to the art and science of collecting and analysing real-life language data. Every year, HKU linguistics students travel to a country unknown to them and immerse themselves into its people, language and culture. Past trips have been to Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Nepal, China, Korea, Denmark, Greece, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, and Ethiopia.

March 2023, Yogyakarta.

We worked with staff and students from the Sanata Dharma University
over our 10 day trip in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It was a journey of
rewarding exchanges from both parties.

 We experienced traditions

"I went into this field trip expecting it be a rigorous academic endeavour, but it turned out to be so much more than that. From a very warm welcome and hospitality to our Indonesian friends’ generous help with our projects, this trip was really an exercise in gratitude for me. We might not be able to meet up with our Indonesian friends often (although we definitely plan to visit!), but I will always keep our bond close to heart. More importantly, the kindness they’ve treated us with has provoked thoughts on what kind of person I want to be when interacting with others. I really hope to carry forth their sense of goodwill, and to treat others with the same altruism that I was so grateful to receive."
